Find healing and connection with Internal Family Systems therapy, wherever you are in the UK.
Why People in the UK Are Turning to IFS Therapy

Looking inside
Life in the UK today is busy, pressured, and often overwhelming. Work demands, family responsibilities, and relationship challenges can leave you feeling stuck or disconnected. For many men and couples, there’s an extra layer — it’s hard to admit when things aren’t working, or to reach out for help.
IFS (Internal Family Systems) therapy offers a different way forward. Instead of focusing only on problems, IFS helps you understand the parts of yourself that are struggling, protecting, or longing for something different. This approach creates real, lasting change because it works with the whole of who you are.
What Is IFS Therapy?
IFS is a modern, evidence-based therapy model that views the mind as made up of different “parts” — like the stressed part that pushes you to keep working, the angry part that lashes out, or the hurt part that feels rejected. Alongside these parts is your deeper Self — calm, compassionate, and capable of healing.
In IFS therapy, you’ll learn to:
- Recognise and work with the different parts inside you.
- Understand the protective strategies that sometimes cause conflict.
- Access more of your Self so you can lead your life with clarity and confidence.
- Build healthier, more connected relationships.

Why Choose IFS Therapy Online in the UK?
- Accessible anywhere – whether you’re in London, Manchester, Edinburgh, or a rural village, you can connect with therapy online.
- Convenient scheduling – I work with clients across the UK, fitting sessions around busy lives.
- A male therapist’s perspective – while many therapists are women, some men and couples find it refreshing and grounding to work with a male therapist who understands their struggles.
- IFS focus – not all therapists are trained in IFS. This is my core approach, alongside couples therapy models that create real relationship change.
Steps to how we work
1.
Who I Work With
I support individuals and couples across the UK who are facing:
- Relationship breakdown, betrayal, or disconnection.
- Anxiety, stress, or burnout.
- ADHD, dyslexia, or neurodiversity challenges.
- Midlife transitions and identity questions.
- A longing to feel more at ease, confident, and connected.
2.
IFS Couples Therapy in the UK
Many couples come to me when they’re at a breaking point — after an affair, in the middle of constant arguments, or when one partner is ready to leave. IFS offers a way to step back from blame and instead look at what’s happening inside each partner.
Together, you’ll learn to:
- Notice the protective parts that trigger fights.
- Hear the hurt and vulnerable parts beneath the anger.
- Reconnect with compassion and trust.
- Build communication that actually works.
Even when things feel hopeless, couples often find new possibilities with IFS therapy.
3.
How Online Therapy Works
- Sessions are held on Google Meet, private and secure.
- We meet weekly or fortnightly, depending on your needs.
- All you need is a quiet space and an internet connection.
- I offer individual sessions (60/90 minutes) and couples sessions (90 minutes).
Why Work With Me?
I’m Alister Gates, a counsellor and therapist originally from New Zealand, now working with clients across the UK and Europe. I specialise in Internal Family Systems (IFS), couples therapy, and men’s issues.
Clients tell me they value my grounded, compassionate approach and the fresh perspective I bring as a male therapist. I combine IFS with other leading couples models to create therapy that is both practical and deeply transformative.
